Diaper rash is a very common condition that causes the skin to become sore, red, scaly and tender. Children in diapers or people who are incontinent often experience diaper rash due to their skin being exposed to urine or feces for a prolonged period of time or friction from diapers.
Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD) is a type of diaper rash resulting from frequent exposure to urine and feces. IAD most commonly affects the perineum, groin, thighs, buttox and anal region. Signs of IAD may include erythema (redness of the skin), edema (swelling), blistering, skin erosion, weeping and pain.
Replacing the collection device (i.e. diaper) after every incontinent episode can help reduce the riskĀ of skin irritation and diaper rash. In addition, applying a skin barrier to protect the skin from urine and feces can help maintain healthy skin and manage diaper rashes and IAD.
