Why wear a colostomy pouch?

Tip Print Share
After colostomy surgery, stool will pass out of the body through the stoma, instead of the anus. Unlike the anus, the stoma has no muscle to control the release of stool or gas. An ostomy pouch is worn to securely collect all waste from the stoma.

Just after the operation, you might find that your stools smell stronger and are looser than you are used to. This will change once your body has adjusted to the stoma. Just as before your operation, the consistency of your stool will depend on your diet.

Learn more about how a colostomy pouch works and how to manage it. Or go to your interactive guide to managing ostomy appliances.

There are several different types of colostomy pouching systems. Your Wound, Ostomy, Continence (WOC) Nurse will show you which one is right for you.
